What is it like dating when you are popular on the internet?
We all know that dating has completely changed in the digital age. With dating apps and social media, most of us meet online before we meet in person. On top of this, for some posting their partner can be a difficult decision. Especially if you’re stuck in the talking stage (don’t worry we’ve all been there).
But what is it like for those who have a large presence online? Who people know through social media like TikTok.
Aoife Mcmorrow, who started her TikTok in April 2020 and has almost four hundred thousand followers and over forty million likes, knows all too well about what it’s like dating whilst being internet famous.
She said: “I never really considered it, if anything I find it a bit weird like you cry on the internet for views, that’s questionable. It’s not something idealised so I didn’t realise that other people did, until recently.”
After recently being cheated on and breaking up with her boyfriend she’s realised that her presence on TikTok can affect her relationships.
She said: “I never considered it when I first started making TikToks until now. Now I’m unpacking things, thinking right maybe some people don’t actually like you for you, they like you because everyone else likes you. That’s why they have you in their life”
She explained her process on how she coped with finding out that her ex had cheated.
She said: “The first time I got cheated on I was literally sobbing, I was grovelling to this man, ‘thinking why am I not good enough?’ Now looking back I would never do that.”
“You don’t cheat on people you like! So I was like why was this man with me. So I think a lot of it comes from; he just thought I was just this thing, like look at my girlfriend she’s this popular TikToker!”
Aoife gave us some advice to all the singletons struggling with self-love.
She said: “I do so many weird things, one thing I do, if it’s to do with my appearance and also to separate self-worth from my appearance: I don’t have a full body mirror which my friends think is really weird.”
“But I don’t do it because I don’t like the way I look, I do it because I want to completely separate the way I look from the value I have for myself. That’s definitely helped me with the whole cheating thing because I don’t even correlate those two things”
